Listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1980, Fung Yuen Valley is a forested ravine behind the village of Fung Yuen. Despite being located along the urban fringe, the site is home to over 200 butterfly species, accounting for about 90% of the total 245 butterfly species in Hong Kong. In particular, it is recognised as an important breeding site for some butterflies of conservation importance, such as White Dragontail (Lamproptera curius) and Common Birdwing (Troides helena).
With the support from the Environment and Conservation Fund (2005-2021) and Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme (since 2021), the Environmental Association (EA) has been carrying out the 'Management Agreement on the Private Land with High Conservation Value at Fung Yuen Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Tai Po, Hong Kong'. This includes habitat and species monitoring and management, as well as implementation of educational projects to promote butterfly conservation. Schools and organisations are welcome to apply for professional guided tours of the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve at EA's Fung Yuen Nature and Culture Education Centre. EA also regularly organises different educational activities, such as the Fung Yuen Butterfly Festival. For activity details, please visit https://fungyuen.org/en
