Every year Hong Kong takes part in the City Nature Challenge, an event in which participants take photographs of nature (plants, insects, birds, fungi, reptiles, etc.), ANYWHERE in Hong Kong on the free app, iNaturalist. There is no need to register and is FREE to join!
In April 2021, Hong Kong placed 2nd out of 419 cities for 'Most Species logged' and has been consistently in the Top 5 since joining in 2018.
More and more cities take part every year yet for Hong Kong, it is the largest collaborative biodiversity engagement exercise with more than 40 local organisations, institutions and schools involved.
iNaturalist is a crowd-sourcing app that allows users to upload geo-linked photographs of species to a global database where they can be identified by other users anywhere in the world. It is also an excellent way of monitoring the biodiversity in and around your area.
