Arachnology in Hong Kong is fairly underdeveloped despite spiders' significance in different ecosystems.

ECF Hong Kong Spider Survey – Ecological Education Programme addresses the public's negative perceptions towards spiders and looks into the local species diversity to advocate arachnology through various educational activities.

Apart from the educational activities that aims to eradicate public's misconceptions, the project organized the first-ever systematic Citizen Science survey targeting on spiders in Hong Kong to collect baseline data and establish a comprehensive databank.

With the unrelenting endeavors of participants of the Citizen Science survey over 8 consecutive months, the programme successfully unveiled the residence of Anyphaenidae and Trachilidae, two families of spiders which are new to Hong Kong (as compared to renowned literatures "World Spiders Catalog" and "A Guide to the Spiders of Hong Kong"). On top of the crucial verification of family distribution, over 4,700 observations collected across the territory of Hong Kong as well serves as essential baseline data for understanding spiders' distribution, ecology and seasonality.

In due course, Hong Kong Common Spider Web was officially launched for public's access to learn about 100 most commonly observed spider species in Hong Kong. The collective effort of professionals and participants throughout the programme had constructed the website, which covers a wide range of information from each individual species to spiders as an animal group. It has accumulated over 50,000 visits since launch in 2021 May.

Educational workshops and training programmes were also offered to primary, secondary and tertiary students. Over 800 members of the general public and students engaged in the programme in person.
