Lai Chi Wo is a traditional Hakka village with over 300 years of history, nestled in the far northeastern corner of Hong Kong. The dense Fung Shui Wood at Lai Chi Wo is home to a rich diversity of animals and plants. It is currently protected within the boundaries of Plover Cove Country Park, Special Area, as well as Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.
The forest of Coastal Heritiera (Heritiera littoralis) and White-flowered Derris (Derris alborubra) at Lai Chi Wo has had a long history. Coastal Heritiera is the largest mangrove species in Hong Kong, while White-flowered Derris is a gigantic climbing plant. They are intertwined to form a unique landscape. Besides, the mudflat at Lai Chi Wo exhibits high biodiversity, and was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1979.
With the support from the Environment and Conservation Fund (2005–2021) and Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme (since 2021), the Hong Kong Countryside Foundation has been carrying out the 'Management Agreement Scheme at Lai Chi Wo Enclave'. The scheme has engaged local community farmers to adopt nature-friendly farming with an aim to conserving the biodiversity of the area. Volunteer engagement and guided tours have also been organised to promote the importance of biodiversity, countryside conservation and rural sustainability.
